Local authority housing, also called council housing, are properties owned by your local council.

How to apply for local authority housing

You can apply through your local council. Essex County Council does not provide local authority housing.

Once you apply, your local council will assess your needs and decide if you're a priority for housing. If you are, you can join their waiting list, also known as housing register.

Paying for local authority housing

You may be eligible for Housing Benefit if you live in a housing association home or if you rent privately, as long as you meet the criteria.
