Independent Living, also known as Extra Care, is attractive, self-contained housing with a mixture of 1 and 2 bed apartments available within a block. The housing is available to people over 55 with a care need typically of a minimum of six hours per week. One of the key features of these schemes is the provision of a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week care and support on site to respond to emergency requirements - a service known as 'Peace of Mind'.
The main difference is that Extra Care schemes are older in design and smaller in size compared to the newer Independent Living schemes, and therefore offer fewer communal facilities.
We are reviewing the provision of Independent Living across Essex and will provide further information regarding this in the near future.
